What it is
The Transalpina is the national road DN67C, described as the highest road in Romania; its highest point is Urdele Pass, at 2,145 m.
The weight limit
In 2026, on the section between Rânca (km 34+800) and Curpăt (km 79+200), vehicles with a maximum authorised mass above 3.5 t are prohibited. Some large motorhomes can exceed 3.5 t, so check your vehicle’s maximum authorised mass. The sources do not mention separate rules for caravans, trailers or motorhomes.
Opening and hours
The section reopened on 29 May 2026 at 09:00. The announced hours: 09:00–20:00 until 30 June and 07:00–21:00 in July–August; night traffic is not allowed. One source also mentions a 30 km/h limit. Traffic can be closed or restricted temporarily because of weather.
In winter
In winter, traffic on this section is prohibited. In 2025 the road closed on 20 October; the exact date differs from year to year, so check first if you travel in late autumn.
Where to check officially
According to one source, the only authorities entitled to announce officially whether the road is open are CNAIR, DRDP Craiova and the Traffic Police. The CNAIR website shows the status of national roads and traffic restrictions.
